Butler Symphony Announces Music Director Finalists For 2024-25 Season

From the relentless drive of “Mars” to the broad splendor of “Jupiter” and the eerie stillness of “Neptune,” Gustav Holst’s The Planets remains one of the great orchestral spectaculars. Britannica describes the suite as seven short tone poems inspired by astrology rather than astronomy, and the final movement is famous for its wordless offstage women’s chorus, which seems to drift away into infinity. Opening the evening, Paul Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice brings wit, color, and storytelling to the stage, transforming Goethe’s tale of magical chaos into one of the orchestra’s most vivid showpieces, later made iconic for many listeners through Disney’s Fantasia. This concert will also feature the annual Concerto Competition and Side-by-Side performance, giving the evening an added spirit of celebration and discovery.

Butler Symphony Announces Music Director Finalists For 2024-25 Season

Explore landscapes, memories, and imagination, through some of Britain’s most evocative music. Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, first performed in London in 1919, is one of his most personal works: somber, introspective, and marked by the atmosphere of the closing months of the First World War. It will be performed by cellist Angela Park, who is Artist Lecturer in Cello at Carnegie Mellon University and whose career includes concerto appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Seoul Philharmonic. Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes adds vivid portraits of an English seaside world—Dawn, Sunday Morning, Moonlight, and Storm.

We will also premiere a new work in partnership with the Sing Me A Story Foundation. A child with medical need will “tell as story” to a composer, who will then, under the coordination of Music Director Moon Doh, turn that story into a full orchestral composition. The family of this child, as well as members of the Foundation, will record the performance and raise funds for the medical needs. More details to come!

    Beethoven's Legacy

    7:30- 9:30 pm

    Moon Doh, Music Director

Butler Symphony Announces Music Director Finalists For 2024-25 Season

This concert places one of music’s great revolutionaries in conversation with a major contemporary voice. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, is described as one of the earliest violin concertos on such a grand scale and as perhaps his most lyrical work; here it is performed by viral sensation and violinist extraordinaire Callum Smart, whose official biography highlights a broad concerto career with major orchestras and praises his authority, sincerity, and “utterly convincing” interpretations. The second half brings Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, the Eroica—the expansive, dramatic landmark that is noted to be grander and more intense than customary symphonies of its day. Also to be performed is Unsuk Chin’s five-minute subito con forza. Written in 2020 as a compact tribute to Beethoven, reimagining his sudden contrasts and forceful gestures in brilliant modern orchestral color.

Fifty years after Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope premiered on May 25, 1977, Star Wars at 50 celebrates the symphonic sound of a saga that reshaped popular culture. This program’s franchise-wide approach gives you room to honor not only the original film but the larger galaxy of themes audiences know and love. John Williams’s score for the original Star Wars won the Academy Award for Original Score, AFI says the A New Hope soundtrack tops its list of the greatest American film scores, and StarWars.com has gone so far as to describe its impact as having changed film music forever. In the concert hall, those themes still feel as thrilling, noble, and exhilarating as ever.
