Pre-Concert Lecture: A Rare Look Inside the Music
Concertgoers are invited to arrive early and deepen their concert experience with a special pre-concert lecture at 6:30 PM in the auditorium before the Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Voices of America: From Within and Afar.
This engaging discussion will feature composer Katie Jenkins and conductor Moon Doh. Jenkins will speak about her work Hiraeth, which was commissioned by the New York Repertory Orchestra and premiered on May 15, 2025. The Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s performance marks only the second time this piece has been presented publicly, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear directly from the composer about the inspiration, sound, and emotional meaning behind the music. The pre-concert lecture sets the stage for Voices of America: From Within and Afar, a program that explores more than 130 years of American musical expression. The concert highlights the diverse voices and influences that have shaped American music, blending familiar works with contemporary compositions that reflect themes of identity, resilience, and longing.
Both the pre-concert lecture and the concert take place at Butler Intermediate High School. The lecture begins at 6:30 PM, followed by the concert at 7:30 PM. Attending the lecture provides valuable context and insight, helping listeners connect more deeply with the music they will hear on stage.
Whether you are a longtime symphony supporter or attending for the first time, the pre-concert lecture offers a meaningful way to enhance your evening and gain a behind-the-scenes look at a rare and compelling contemporary work.
Tickets may be purchased in advance online—click here to buy your tickets—and are also available at the door on the evening of the performance, pending availability. Advance purchase is recommended.
