2010-2011 Season: Images
On April 16, the Butler County Symphony Orchestra will premiere an original composition written by the winner of our Composer Competition.
All performances are at 7:30 p.m. unless specified otherwise, and are held at the Butler Area Intermediate High School Auditorium (address and directions). The orchestra plays “Savannah River Holiday Overture” by Ron Nelson, “The Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana and “Four Sea Interludes” by Benjamin Britten. Popular guest artist, glass harpist Jamey Turner, returns to perform on more than sixty water-filled brandy snifters. Photographer Phil Norton shows slides. November 6, 2010 – EARTH. Music for this program includes “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, accompanied with slides by Phil Norton, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral”. Soloist is BCO’s principal oboist, Gary Purifoy, performing Vaughan William’s “Oboe Concerto”. December 4, 2010 – VISIONS OF SUGAR PLUMS. Holiday music includes Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite”, Richman’s “Festival of Hannukkah”, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and from Handel’s Messiah, “Hallelujah Chorus.” An ensemble of eight harps dominates the front of the stage. February 12, 2011 – ROMANCE. Featured performer is guitarist Marco Sartor playing “Concierto de Aranjuez” by Joaquin Rodrigo. The program also includes “Ruslan and Ludmilla Overture” by Glinka and Nielson’s “Symphony No. 3, Symphonia Espansiva”. March 12, 2011 – FIRE. The orchestra plays Manuel de Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance” with slides by photographer Phil Norton, and selections from Rodion Shchedrin’s “Carmen Suite”. The guest soloist will be the winner of the 32nd annual Young Artist Competition, college age category. April 16, 2011 – SPACE. Selections include “Clair de Lune” by Debussy and “The Planets” by Gustav Holst.
