Sophia S. Lee, native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a rapidly rising star in the harp world. She is a current student of Gretchen Van Hoesen, Principal Harpist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO).
At just fifteen years old, she has swept several first prizes including the 2013 American Harp Society National Competition Intermediate I Division in Los Angeles, the New Artist Division of the 2012 International Young Artist’s Harp Competition in Rabun Gap, Georgia, and the Solo Strings Division of the Duquesne Young Artist National Competition in 2010 and 2012.
She performed Tournier’s Feérie at Carnegie Hall in New York City as the grand prizewinner of the 2013 National Young Musicians Showcase Competition in New Jersey, and was a featured soloist at the 9th USA International Harp Competition’s Stars of Tomorrow in Bloomington, Indiana.
Sophia has been a performer on National Public Radio’s From the Top, a preeminent showcase for young musicians.
This coming July, she will be a featured soloist at the 12th World Harp Congress Focus on Youth Concert in Sydney, Australia.
Sophia has several upcoming performances in the Pittsburgh area this spring. She will perform with the Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra as the winner of the Young Artists Competition and with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO) as the winner of its Concerto Competition.
She has performed harp solos at Heinz Hall, Carnegie Music Hall, the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, PA, PNC Recital Hall at Duquesne University, and Alumni Concert Hall & Kresge Theater at Carnegie Mellon University.
A harpist for PYSO, she has participated in numerous chamber ensembles with members of the PSO, PYSO, and Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Harp Society. She has participated in master classes with Heidi Van Hoesen Gorton, Claire Jones, Bridget Kibbey, and Sivan Magen.
In her spare time, Sophia enjoys reading, traveling and playing golf.
